Who Is The Ibis Theater?

Our Mission

The Ibis is a professional Theatrical Shadow Work Company, created by the artist for the artist, to explore communal healing through modern and traditional forms of Storytelling.

Our Vision

We provide a collaborative space to explore, validate and elevate the stories and themes that matter to the Artists and Audiences from the Other Perspective. We create a space that celebrates People of Color, Queer/LGBTQ and Expanded Gender Perspectives in all forms rather than erases or diminishes them. We give the spotlight to those who have been marginalized and regulated to the shadows, revealing the truths that exist there.

Meet The Creative Collective

Luna Alexander - Creative Director

Artistic Director

Luna is an actor, director, writer and storyteller who fell in love with the healing magic of theatre at the age of 5. Her parents met backstage at the Ann Arbor Civic theatre over chili and it was game over, man. Getting the opportunity to explore so many incredible stories across Michigan stages over the last 24 years has been a blessing and a privilege and she’s honored to continue spinning yarns with the creative voices of the Mitten.

Her favorite words are gentle, pulchritudinous and why.

Victoria Weatherspoon - Creative Director

Operational Director

When someone asks me what I do, I tell them I am a Creator. To my core, that is what I am and what I long to do. I have been an actor, a writer, a director, a stage manager, a singer, and have worn other hats, for over 20 years, but at the end of the day, it’s about creating art. Born and raised in Detroit, I just want to make people feel, together, with art that comes from every part of me - of us.

What is a “Shadow Work” Company ?

We each come to the theatre for different reasons: to laugh, to cry, to be dazzled, to look in wonder at magic happening in front of our eyes: to connect with each other. During these shadowplays, we are able to laugh in delight or shrink back in horror at the monsters and heroes that bring us together. This is a collective form of Shadow Work - a dance between the Artist and the Audience, joined in our ability to recognize the characters in our own stories reflected on our stages. When we acknowledge our shadows with compassion and understanding, we are able to appreciate our light.

As we continue to expand the limits of our stage spaces in this virtual century, we invite you to laugh with us, cry with us and heal with us, connecting the artist onstage with the artist in the audience through the storytelling of the Detroit Delta.
